Celebrating the Ancients... a Humbling Journey:
Wang Hui's landscapes... and the study of his visions, techniques, and colors inspire a sense of wonder, calm, peace, tranquility...
I love Chinese and Japanese Landscapes...
This tiny Gong Dao Bei is a tribute to Wang Hui, the most celebrated late 17th century Chinese painter and his varying shades of green and textured trees, creating a pattern in his paintings, drawing the eyes on a journey through the hills and mountains in his landscapes.
Maybe 5 years ago, I started glaze testing to gather a toolbox of glazes that celebrate the colors he used, the textures he created, the mood and emotions his work evokes...
I think I will be studying his work and designing surfaces that humbly emulate, celebrate, honor him as the master artist that he was for the rest of my life.
As with tea, I shall always and forever be the student.
This tiny pitcher is great as a Gong Dao Bei or is perfectly at home holding maple syrup, cream, salad dressing, hot fudge sauce for ice cream, berry sauce for cake...
or any other delicious sauce for any other delicious dish!
The Gong Dao Bei 公道杯 ("Justice Cup") is used as a secondary vessel, a place to hold tea that has been decanted from the primary vessel. This allows for precision timing - the steeping process can be halted at the perfect moment and consolidated in the Gong Dao Bei to make sure that every cup is the ideal concentration.
This pitcher is 3.25" tall.
Hand-thrown, Hand-decorated, and hand-signed using sturdy and functional red clay produced in Canada. This pitcher is built to last, made to be used and bring a little smile to your day.
I create in small batches. Each piece is thrown in the likeness of the next, hand-crafted, and with hand-brushed glazing. I hope you’ll agree variations in color, small marks from the minerals and stone in the clay, or slight sways in design resulting from working with natural materials create the charm expected and treasured in handmade pottery.
Food-safe materials. Dishwasher and microwave safe, although I hand wash and shy away from microwaving my hot beverages.
