Celebrating the Ancients... a Humbling Journey:
Wang Hui's landscapes... and the study of his visions, techniques, and colors inspire a sense of wonder, calm, peace, tranquility...
I love Chinese and Japanese Landscapes...
This Gaiwan set is a tribute to Wang Hui, the most celebrated late 17th century Chinese painter and his deep brown mountains and hillsides, highlighted in verdigris green.
Maybe 5 years ago, I started glaze testing to gather a toolbox of glazes that celebrate the colors he used, the textures he created, the mood and emotions his work evokes...
I think I will be studying his work and designing surfaces that humbly emulate, celebrate, honor him as the master artist that he was for the rest of my life.
As with tea, I shall always and forever be the student.
Size is measured comfortably below where the lid fits into the Gaiwan body and also the volume that is well below the rim of each cup.
The Gaiwan and cup are glazed on the interior with a matte white liner glaze.
Hand-thrown, Hand-decorated, and hand-signed using sturdy and functional brown stoneware clay produced in Montana. This set is built to last, made to be used and bring a little smile to your day.
I create in small batches. Each piece is thrown in the likeness of the next, hand-crafted, and with hand-brushed glazing. I hope you’ll agree variations in color, small marks from the minerals and stone in the clay, or slight sways in design resulting from working with natural materials create the charm expected and treasured in handmade pottery.
Food-safe materials. Dishwasher and microwave safe, although I hand wash and shy away from microwaving my hot beverages.
